TEL HI’s ESL Classes for Aging Adults: Empowering Our Community Through Language
March 24, 2025
Last year, TEL HI offered 12 English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for aging adults to help non-native speakers develop essential conversational English skills and build confidence in their speaking abilities. These classes provided valuable support, helping participants improve their fluency and comfort in everyday interactions.
Taught by an instructor from City College Chinatown, the classes focused on fundamental language skills. Participants learned how to introduce themselves, talk about where they are from, share their favorite activities, and use common greetings in English. The curriculum also featured practical lessons on everyday skills like asking about prices, requesting assistance, and forming common questions—tools that help individuals navigate daily life with confidence.
The impact of these ESL classes on our program participants was significant, fostering a sense of inclusion and confidence within our senior community whom English is not their first language.
Due to the success of this program, we are actively seeking funding to bring ESL classes back in 2025.
